New trends for 2009: Stripes and Plains

Sometimes a small room in your home can look too busy with a large scale pattern which is why our striped and plain wallpapers are perfect for the job. Our Lille Linen wallpaper at just £20 a roll is a twist on the stripe wallpaper - this printed washable wide stripe design features pearlescent inks for shimmering highlights and looks lovely as a feature on it own or as a compliment to a bolder statement wall. You liked this wallpaper so much that we have re-coloured it into a variety of colour palettes from Duck Egg to Gold.

If you want something with a simpler pattern then try our Barton Willow wallpaper for just £16 a roll. A twist on the plain wallpaper - this printed washable design has a discreet weave detail which can equally match with a larger scale designed wallpaper or as a feature on its own. This wallpaper, which also comes in a Natural colour, is suitable for all interiors including well-ventilated kitchens and bathrooms.

Laura Ashley is launching three luxurious flock wallpapers: Marciana cranberry, Marciana charcoal and Whatley linen. Flock wallpaper is an exciting new development for us and we hope you like it.

Flock printing is a fascinating science. Firstly the raw flock fibres need to be dyed to our specific colours. During the dyeing process it takes great expertise to ensure the fibres maintain the electrostatic qualities, essential to flocking. Fibres can easily lose their charge if precise temperature & moisture levels are not met.

Once the fibres have been dyed, they are transferred to the flock-printing machine. The machine we use is approx 80m in length! The paper from start to finish runs approx 120m at a speed of only 6m per minute, this distance & speed ensures the flock fibre sticks permanently to the paper, and produces a high quality plush finish.

Firstly, the chosen pattern is printed onto our pre-coloured wallpaper ground using a special adhesive, this is then fed into a flocking station where the magic begins! The flocking station is actually more of a room where flock fibres are sprinkled from above through a charged atmosphere of 35,000 volts. The combination of this voltage & a specific climate causes the charged fibres to land, incredibly, end-up onto the adhesive. The process that follows sets & tidies the flock fibres through drying, vacuuming & brushing. Finally, 2+ days after the process started, we have a stunning flock wallpaper.

Non woven paste-the-wall paper has been used for our flock wallpapers so please consider this when hanging. The flock wallpapers will be stocked in 50 of our Laura Ashley stores as well as online and will retail at £75 per 10m roll.
