LAVENDER HEARTS

You will need:
Cardboard
Main fabric
Contrast fabric for backing and hanging loops
Cotton batting
Multipurpose glue
Matching thread and tacking thread
Dried lavender (from £2.29 for 50g, Daisy Gifts, 01323 896807, daisyshop.co.uk)
To decorate: a mix of contrast trim, buttons, embroidery thread and loose-weave canvas.

1 Cut two 13cm-square pieces of card, draw on a heart shape and cut out. Use one card template to cut one heart in main fabric and one in contrast fabric, making each 1cm larger all round. Cut a heart in cotton batting the same size as the card.

2 Apply glue to one side of one card heart and place the contrast fabric on top. Smooth from the centre outwards all round and turn over. Apply glue to the back of the excess fabric and stick in place on the reverse of the card heart.

3 If adding piping trim, cut a strip of bias contrast fabric to fit all round the heart plus 2cm. Fold in half lengthways and tack along the long edges. Stick the trim all round the reverse of the contrast fabric-covered heart, folding in the excess.

4 Place the main fabric face down and sprinkle a good pinch of dried lavender in the centre. Place the cotton batting heart on top and tack in place all round. If using buttons, stitch in place to create a name or initial.

5 Using a sharp pair of scissors, snip into the excess fabric at the centre top of the heart.

6 Apply fabric glue to the wrong side of the excess main fabric and fold over to the reverse of the card heart. Stick firmly in place all round. Remove any visible tacking.

7 If adding an embroidered panel, stitch a name or initials to the centre of a small panel of loose-weave canvas. Tease out the threads all round. Apply fabric glue to the back and press in place on the front of the fabric heart.

8 Create a hanging loop in contrast fabric and glue it to the reverse of the contrast-fabric covered heart. Apply glue liberally across the back of this heart and stick to the reverse of the main heart. Press and put a weight on top until the glue dries.
